Ah....Just a little time away before your first '86' experience.Kicking a rude-*** drunk s.o.b. out of your establishment is a rush.
I was a bartender for awhile and absolutely loved the job.I was basically a quiet, reserved person but it all worked out alright with socializing with patrons and I was amazed at my skills after I started.I was worried like you were too.
Sure, bartending is conversing with an adverse group of people but it is more of a listening thing.Keep a smile on your face definitely(and laugh at their jokes.)
As soon as you obtain status with your "regulars" the talking becomes easier so do'nt worry.....and then the "regulars" somehow buffer the whole atmosphere to become more comfortable.
Bartending is a blast!
Remember....while you are working the bar is YOUR!! bar.
Keep that smile on your face.
Good Luck!

You just have to have a memory for bartending and if you're doing well in classes go for it. The bartender to whom you spill all your troubles is a stereotype of the past. If you work in any good sized club, you won't have time to stop or socialize and you can make good money. I wouldn't advise it as a forever thing but it's a good job while you decide what you want to do when you don't want to be on your feet all day mixing drinks.

bartending is SO fun....and WHY are you taking bartending class...those r sooo pointless. i'm sorry you've wasted time and money....MOST restaurants that have a bar area...train you in all their recipes....most restaurants have different recipes than what any book will tell you, there are like 3-4 different wayz to make a decent Cosmo, but if you're worried about not talking to much, don't!! it's ok. a lot of people who come to the bar are with friends and so they won't HAVE to talk to you, only to order their drinks.

be yourself, i'm sure you're great, make friends with the co-workers, and they'll help you out, they'll give you tips and tricks.

You have to work your &%$ off, but I can't have enough of it. Was even considering as a long term job for me and I'm post-grad now. So you're shy, let me tell you a little secret of the trade, don't worry, the girls are not!!! Go girls!! love to serve'em and love to see those eyes when tasting a great champaigne cocktail while thinking 'whoa...this is sooo goood'. That's the best tip one can get. Who want's a 'Dark dreams'?

I love doing it. Being shy won't help much...learn to socialize. Working that job might bring you out of your shell though. Learn your drinks backwards and forwards, pretend to be interested in what people are saying and you don't have to tolerate someone who's totally pissed. Send them home or get the bouncers to do it. If you tend bar in a topless joint, you don't have to do much talking. The dancers are distracting everyone anyway.
