I have a samsung hl-s5687w 56in hdtv. I also have logitech z-5500 5.1 speakers. I want to plug it into my tv which I would also use for my ps2 and the upcoming ps3 along with my computer every now and then when I plug it in. I dont want to buy a a/v system because of price but if its necessary then I'll see. I guess the question boils down to: Can my plug my speakers directly into the tv? Also what cables would I need?

For your question on if these speakers are good, I really recommend it. It has so much power and I'm only using 1/4 of it and my neighbors complain. I only have it connected to my computer through my motherboard and not a soundcard and it's already impressive.

Well if I don't need a a/v receiver, what cables do I need to connect to my samsung s5687w?

The Z-5500 is self powered so the answer is no, you don't need a separate receiver. In fact, that speaker system has both optical and coaxial digital input so you will totally be good to go.

I've been looking at this system for quite some time. Does it perform well?

After checking the specs on your TV it appears that it doesn't have a digital audio output. That means you will have to use an RCA to 1/8 inch patch cord and listen to TV in two channel analog or Dolby Pro Logic. Bummer. For your PS2/PS3 however, you'll be able to plug an optical digital cord right into it and experience full Dolby Digital and DTS. Bonus.

It will work nicely.

The TV has no digital outputs or built in multi-channel encoding so... you'll have to use a stereo 1/8" plug (speaker end) to dual RCA plug (TV end) analog cable between the TV and speaker system. For more length you can use a 1/8" stereo plug to 2 RCA jack cable and a standard stereo interconnect (RCA plugs on both ends) between the jacks on the cable and the jacks on the TV. This will give you the capability for Dolby Pro-Logic surround from TV broadcasts or DVD / video games decoded by your speaker system. For Dolby Digital from DVD / video games, you'll have to run an additional digital cable (coax or optical) between your DVD player / game system and your speaker system. Select that input and Dolby Digital on your speaker system when watching DVDs for best surround performance.

You could also run a coax / optical digital audio cable from a cable / satellite box with a digital audio output instead of getting analog sound from the TV.

Check to see if your cable or satellite receiver has an optical or digital coaxial audio connection. If you are subsribing to the HDTV service through either cable or satellite, they must have one of those connections in order for it to be true HDTV.

Not to mention the video connections must be component video (the red, green & blue), HDMI or DVI. Anything else is just an analog video connection. Good luck.
