Often when someone belittles another for any reason it is because they feel small themselves and are attempting to reduce someone else so that they can feel big and better about themselves. It is also easy to criticize others in an anonymous forum such as this. Most of these people do not have the courage to confront someone head on and they hide behind their little avatars in safety.

I think it's a combination of both. Most times the need to make derogatory comments about others that are unjustified...whether it's race, religion (or lack thereof), gender, sexual orientation, etc stems from low self-esteem. They feel a need to try to make themselves feel superior by making inferior comments about others. I'm sure there are some people out there who really do think they are doing everyone a service by belittling other faiths (or lack thereof), but even with them I think it's insecurity and a feeling of insignificance. I feel sorry for those people.

They'll stop attacking you when you stop attacking them. You fail to realize that in many threads, even if they're not inflamatory, and even if they have NOTHING to do with religion, a lot of zealots will come in and post about God and how non-believers are going to burn. Take a look around yahoo answers, and you'll see it.
As for feeling insecure and insignificant, not really. Actually, I feel quite good about myself and the fact that I have meaning in my life without being given it by what I feel is a man-created God. I pity people who are blinded by faith. I know I can get a little passionate and rude sometimes, but I don't mean anything by it. It's just that when I see people putting up something as fact when it isn't, I get irritated.

I think most of the people that belittle someone or their religion doesn't fully believe their own religion themselves and are subconsciously convincing them selves of their own belief. If someone cant except that others will believe a different religion and are getting irate about it, it is probley because they don't understand what they are saying. Also they need someone to change their point of view so they can fell better about their own choices.
I think if they were to step back and see they would realize all they are doing is encouraging us to keep our own beliefs, rather than changeing to a religion that is led by force not by choice. In almost all religions there are those that think that they should be the worlds saving grace. and are willing to insult people to get us to see things in there light. So i think for the most part they honestly think they are doing what is necessary to either feel better about themselves or what is needed to convert someone.
And for the few who know what they are doing (insulting and belittling) I don't listen because they are being the judge and jury on all people who doesn't agree with them, and in all religions I'm sure they say something about putting yourself in your "Gods" shoes.and i would venture to guess that is a sin. and not for us to judge.
I say God because of my denomination, I understand in someone ealses denomination, the name of the Almighty could be called by another name, im not aware of others, im sorry
and to Horatio,I read your previous comment and while i understand what you are saying, i must say according to history there is more prof that a man like Christ exised than there is that the orginal Julieus Ceazer ever lived. Any hight school history teacher can confirm that. (well not durning school hours ofcourse)

I don't try to belittle or insult. I am just trying to make Christians see that they are being foolish by worshiping a being (Jesus) who may have in fact never even existed. They go on and on about him but have yet to come up with any significant proof about him. I think it is a silly religion because they worship a man nailed to a cross and therefore are, in effect, asking to be ridiculed, and should expect it. I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings but until they (Christians) start seeing the irrationality of worshiping this non-being, the ridiculing and bashing will continue (not necessarily by me - I have better things to do).

you sure like to stereotype people, don't you? Does that make YOU feel more secure in your faith? The truth of the matter is different people will have one or the other motivation that you mentioned, possible some combination of both, and/or a million other motivators that in your simplicity and generalization fail to even mention.

I would say that it's mostly the first part; feelings of insecurity and insignificance. If a person's truly comfortable with their beliefs then there is no reason to put down others.

I think they are cowards in disguise. They hide behind Answers and just fling out their garbage. Maybe that's the only mentality they have, no real knowledge. Some can't even spell. Ignorance plain and simple.

All I ever really think is how sad their lives must be, and I feel pity for them.
To get pleasure from sitting at a computer hour after hour, gleefully rubbing their hands together as they post insult after insult.
Those poor people, I hope God blesses them real soon with wisdom and discernment.

I think both to an extent. Some are insecure, but others are doing us a favor by making our faith even stronger- if that makes sense.
God Bless
