Amen! Everyone else is completely right, you don't start out on top. And most "professionals" that I know still refer to themselves as professional amateurs, because everyone's definition of "professional" is different.
I'll consider myself a professional photographer and not a pro-amateur the day my studio is the first studio people think of when they think wedding photography, or family portraits. For my friend, she considered herself a pro the day she sold her first print.
I think the best thing for you to do is learn everything you can. Technology is constantly changing in the world of photography, so you can't base being a pro photographer on knowledge alone, because new and different things are coming out every day.
Since you're planning on being a wildlife photographer, you can always find some local magazines about animals or outdoor living in your area that would love to have your pictures. I know of some people who have contacted their local banks and had their images in the calendar that the bank gives out at Christmas. Sometimes they'll pay, sometimes they don't.
Also, depending on the area you live at, you could even make some nice large prints and frame them and sell them at local craft shows. There are tons of people that would purchase some scenic or wildlife images to display in their homes.
I hope this helps!

christopher was right, you dont start at the top of the game... but heres a secret most people dont know... as soon as one person, even one person pays you for a photograph, you can call yourself a professional.
Christopher was wrong though in the way he seemed to put down photoshop... in todays age, photoshop is VITAL to bieng a photographer, amatuer or pro.
best way to start; build yourself a fine portfolio and show it to people who need those kinda photograhs

You don't "start" as a pro. You start as an armature and work your way up. Just like any other line of work.
Otherwise, if you want to get photos published in the NY Times or AP, buy Photo shop and start doctoring those photos.

Keep Practicing. The more pictures you take, the better you will get. Make sure to go to a good college. The better college you go to, the better chance you will get a high profile job.

Not knowing you, I'd say take some pictures. But, as said, no-one starts at the top of anything, unless it was they who invented it.
Go where none has gone before. Easier said than done, but do-able. "All" possibilities are never exhausted.
