Doesn't everyone here have a tendency to preach? Isn't that the reason for coming to "Religion & Spirituality" -- to either ask legitimate questions for the purpose of being preached at, or to preach?

Even your question had a little moralistic sermon implied: "Stop pushing your beliefs on other people."

I'll never understand why people want to come to this section if they don't wish to converse about differences of beliefs. And I also don't understand why people who believe they are right are so harshly maligned. Is it such a worldly sin to be of sound mind -- to know what you believe and practice it accordingly?

I doubt it very much. I believe in a Divine Creator, and my beliefs most closely align with Christianity, so that's what I call myself, but when I see someone preaching, either at me or at someone else, it just makes me angry, and makes me glad I don't go to church.

I do understand that people of all faiths probably cherish what they have and would like to share it with others, but preaching is ineffective, I think. A simple statement of "This is my opinion or this is my belief" suffices--they don't need to drag out their copy of whatever Holy Book they believe in and start quoting verses to back their statement up. I tend to believe someone who says, "I don't support abortion because I believe it kills a child, and I believe killing is wrong," a lot more than I believe someone who takes the time to quote ten different Biblical references that talk about killing.

When I see someone who is really preachy, and uses their Holy Scripture as a foundation for all they say, I honestly wonder why they don't have the courage of their convictions. Why do they need to preach, rather than just posting an opinion? Do they really, really believe in their hearts, or do they just believe what they have been taught to believe, and prefer to follow like a lamb?

I think what your saying is that people preach eventhough it has a the opposite effect that they are looking for but they do it anyway. Well cause thats all they know and they probably think if they dont preach they will go to hell. Well hey whatever suits them right? I mean you know how christians are, they live for whats to comes after their life not for now. Its just in their religion.

I know what you mean; preaching usually puts people on the defensive rather than making a positive difference.
I think that people who preach a lot (here or anywhere) tend to do so not because they're really hoping to help someone or improve someone's life, but because they want to control that person. In other words, they want to force other people to go along with what they percieve as "right".

You're right, whether Christian or atheist, if we get preached at by the opposite side - we get busy and get stronger in our beliefs.

But you have to remember if someone asks a serious question, we need to be able to site the Bible to show why we believe certain things.

But preaching on either side - it helps no one.

The only "ironic" effect it would have is on those with their minds made up already, so it really wouldn't be ironic, just expected.

LOL... I love the humor of irony and your question has brought about even more of it.

To answer your question, no, they do not seem to realize it.
