My 3yr old yorkie keeps chasing my new 6 month old pup around the house. The pup is teething very badly and nips at the older dog from time to time. This is when the older dog will nip the puppy back. I understand that there is a need for the older dog to set the standard for dominance but sometimes she will chase the pup around the house and then bite him. I monitor them and step in when it seems to be getting out of hand, but I don't want to get in the way of her establishing her dominance over him (the pup). Is this normal behavior for them? Should I continue to let them be and stop them when it looks to be getting out of hand or do I just let it be b/c this is the older dogs way of letting the pup know who's boss? I really want them to get along but am having a hard time seeing how it's possible when this is constantly going on. I have the pup for a month and thought they would be pals by now. Please help!

I would continue doing what you are doing now. Monitor things to make sure it doesn't get out of hand. Maybe seperate them when you cannot watch them together.

You need to be sure that you correct the puppy. I'm not saying let the original dog do horrible things and get away with them, but that older dogs needs your support. If he thinks you are always protecting or backing up the new one, you could have problems and it might "get ugly" for the new guy. Really, that original dog needs to know that you affirm he is still tops.

Please don't put Bitter Apple on a dog . . .
