Good question.

the answer is no. medicine by itself doesn't cure a disease.
a medicine as an antibiotic for example lowers infection to a point the body can dispose of it.
And as for viruses, they are incurable, its very weird to be ''cured''
most of the times medicines only help relieve conditions or symptoms or help maintain them in certain parameters, for better quality of life of the person who has them.

thanks for the question.

I work in the pharmaceutical field. I personally think not taking anything is sometimes better. It gives your body a chance to use it's immune system. I would take something to treat the symptoms like a sore throat, congestion, etc. I would only take antibiotics or antivirals if you've been sick for a few days or symptoms dramatically increase. As far as herbal, there is a great product out called Cold-fx and it does have great clinical data and natural stuff is always easier on your body. Also remember a lot of it is mental especially stuff related to colds. Alternative medicine is being more popular since it's less invasive and doesn't always require a prescription from a doctor.

If you feel you don't need the medicine, don't take it. If you have an infection you do NEED an anibiotic but otherwise rest, plenty of water and sleep and the body will usually heal itself.
I am certain if you had any serious illness that cannot be cured like arthritis you might need painkillers, however some creams applied to the pain and ice packs iare just as good. And hypertension (high blood pressure) and cholesterol can be lowered by diet and exercise!

Yes medicines do help cure sickness. Penicllian is a great way to help boost your immune system and protect you against further dangers. Plants have cured people for thousands of years. I am a botanist/ethnobotanist.

Becareful of taking medicines. I do not think you need to take meds for everything and I think sometimes overkill really does not do good but does harm.

It all depends on the illness and the medicine. The others here have given some pretty good explanations, but I'll just throw in my two cents worth...

Some illnesses, like the common cold or the flu, will get better with time, regardless of medication treatment. As others stated, the medicines are used merely to ease the symptoms. In some cases, the medicines that relieve the symptoms may actually prolong the illness. For example, taking a fever reducer (antipyretic) like Tylenol or Advil will make you more comfortable by inhibiting the release of pyrogens in your immune system and therefore, allowing your body temperature to return to normal. However, by chemically inhibiting your body's natural immune response, you are hindering the body's ability to fight off the infection.

But, in many cases, medication therapy is essential to recovery. An asthma patient experiencing a severe asthma attack may need to use a drug like albuterol in order to open the air passages to allow better ventilation. In severe cases, paramedics or physicians may administer drugs like epinephrine, terbutaline, and/or corticosteroids to alleviate the problem. In such cases, patients may die without the treatment.

Without knowing specifically what your disorder is, I can't make a recommendation.

Some medicine is made to alleviate symptoms.

For example, if you have a cold, you can take medicine to make your headache less, or make the sneezing stop. You'll still have a cold for five days, either way; but medicine will make you feel better while you have it.

Medicines don't cure sicknesses, they relieve them.

not all medication cure sickness. sometimes the medicines you took just to eliminate symptoms of diseases, or just to make you fell better. your own immune system will do the killing pathogen work. your immune system still be able fight the disease even though you don't take medicine. the only thing is the disease symptom (fever, cold, cough, weak, pain) will make you feel terrible.

however, not all medicines work that way. we still need medicine to help killing pathogen sometimes.

the question is, is that medicine tends to cure your sickness or it is given to cure the symptoms.

it is a common practice that when you are sick, you always cure the symptoms only not the sickness itself. for example, a person complaining of arthritis tends to take painkillers, but the painkillers is for pain only, not for curing arthritis.
