2) Double it

3) Add 8

4) Divide your answer by 2

5) Take away the first number you thought of

Has anyone noticed that someone answered this question with '22 divided by 2 equalling 10? Sorry to point it out, but it sounded like you were going against the grain.

because

let x be the number we thought

twice it then add by 8 divide by 2 ==> (2x + 8) /2

equals to x + 4

then if we take our number which is x, it will be

(x + 4) - x

which leads us always to number 4

Thats simple enough it works because the 8.
Y = (2X + 8)/2 - X
Y = X + 4 - X
Y = 4

the number you picked is nonsense. you doubled it then divided by two later. afterwards, you took away the original number. so nothing left..
