A prayer is said for the deceased at the wake. The prayer is so that the persons being(heart, mind and soul) rise and rest in peace. Prayers are also said for the deceased family, so that the pain of losing a loved one may be comforted.

There are many funerals that do not pray for the dead but pray for the family and friends of the deceased. That is usually the Christian way. Catholics on the other hand do pray for the souls of the deceased. It is all what you believe. I am not into praying for the deceased, once one dies it is all in God's hands.

I don't know what kind of funerals you go to, but the prayer is for the living, that they might carry on. Funerals are not for the dead anyway, they are designed for the living. A costly casket, all the flowers in the world, and all the word said after someone dies is not going to get him or her one step closer to heaven. And yes, I am a baptized Christian.

The dead have left the earth but their spirits still progress. You can pray to communicate with them and to send blessings their way in behalf of Jesus Christ. We can pray that they will accept the gospel if they didn't in this life and work can be done for their spiritual progression, both in the spirit world and on earth. We also pray for our own comfort as well.

Sometimes when people sin, even after they've been forgiven, remnants of the sin remain in the person. Until these faults are gone, they can't enter Heaven. They wait in a place called Purgatory until their faults are cleansed. We pray for them so that their time in Purgatory may be shortened.

That's something for Catholics to answer. I'm born again and we don't pray for dead bodies.

Good point, really!
I usually pray for their family and friends having to cope with their grief. Also, I try to pray for other sufferers of whatever disease or accident killed them, like car crashes or heart failure.

There is no purpose, just like there's no purpose in praying for the living.
