We had a rescue Chow that was this way. If a storm happened in the night he would leap onto us when we were sleeping and just quiver. Not beside us, on us! He was very macho the rest of the time and this very much embarrassed him. The next day after he received all of the coddling and reassurances he would not even look at us. Totally mortified him.

My sister suggested Rescue Remedy, you can get it at the health food store and some pet stores. It states it is for humans but we just put a few drops on a biscuit for him and in time he got over it. We did not try this suggestion for years thinking it would not work but it did. Took about six months but then he just seemed to ignore it. I think it just let him calmly go through the storm so he saw it would all be okay.

You may not always be with him at the time thunder etc is happening, so you need to train him not to be afraid.
When everything happens, just ignore it, and treat him as you usually do.
The minute you start fussing over him and trying to comfort him, you are re-inforcing their idea that something awful is happening.
Just act naturally, and maybe even use that time to teach him something, a trick, or even just do an activity that he is used to seeing you doing, when he realises that the world hasn't fallen apart, and that you are not reacting to what is happening, he'll learn to be calmer as well.

Dogs can be very sensitive to noise and the changes in air pressure though, and if this seems to be what is affecting him, your vet can help there, with calming medication..

most dogs are scarred of loud noises because their hearing is so good, all you can really do is just reasure them that they are okay. i had a great dane that if she was a lone durning a thunder storm she would jump thru a window.

Any dog does that.. The only way of making it easy on the dog is by coaxing its ears during the noisy period
