You are supposed to keep your back to them and say excuse me.
Try not to let your buttocks come in contact with any of their body parts.
Do not fart in their general direction.
Sit down quickly once you find your seat.

Simply say excuse me in a quite voice, gender is irrelavant. If they do not respond and you feel they may not have heard you a slight touch to the arm or hand to gather their attentin would not be out of line if followed by the same phrase.
Follow with thank you always shows good manners.

It is awkward isn't it? : ) Especially with those buckets of popcorn!
I think most people face away from the person they are sliding past - it would be much more awkward to face toward them whatever the gender.

You should slide in front or behind someone facing them. If you are sliding behind them and the other person is HOTTT you should rhythmical grind your crotch into them. Trust me, they will appreciate the gesture. If you are sliding past a hottie in the theater, some pelvic thrusts at them in their seat should be a subtle way to tell them that you appreciate them putting up with the inconvenience and would be happy to make it up to them after the movie.
