You'll want to stay away from the "toy" breeds like Chihuahuas, Italian Greyhounds, or Min Pins. They are way too delicate for children.
You might consider a small to medium sized breed like a Pembroke Corgi, Rat Terrier, or Beagle. They tend to be OK with kids, they do shed, but since they have short hair, it's not noticeable. If you are really concerned about shedding, you might try a Miniature Poodle (maybe a larger one if you can find one).
It's better to get an older dog as opposed to a puppy, when you have kids. An older dog will be much more tolerant of the antics of kids than a puppy is, and they are usually already houstrained.
There are lots of very fine dogs available at your local animal shelter that might fit the bill perfectly.
Hope this helps!

I have a one year old schnoodle, schnauzer poodle mix and he is perfect! they are breed so that they don't shed one single hair ( and he hasn't even in the hot summer heat) and they don't bother people with allergies. He is the friendliest dog I have ever seen and is incredibly smart. He is a mini schnauzer and poodle so he is 20 pounds and full-grown but they have all sizes depending on what you cross. He is so gentle and just an all around great guy. He also loves babies!

you may consider a bichon frise, or a bichon mix. they are great family dogs. when bought young, they grow up to love everyone. they are adorable, but, once they are older, they are not the best with strangers. especially kids. not the family though. they always love the family, i mean kids they have never met before. only as they get old though, so when they are young, about the first 6 months, they are fine with everybody. they don't shed very much either. good luck.

My favorite is a mini schnauzer...they have to be groomed, but are hardy dogs to have around small children...come in verious weights...from 8-9 lbs up to 22 lbs...ck out the parents of the dogs to see how big the puppies will be...sorta rule of thumb, they will be almost as big (or as big) as the biggest parent.
Good luck!

a mini american eskimo, they are great with kids, i have one and she is over 13 years old, so get one if you want a dog that will stay around for a long time with ur kids. best to get them while they are young. another good one is a boxer, but they tend to get big. but a white boxer is really cute and boxers dont shed a whole lot. both dogs are very loveable.

Ohh! Bichon Frise is a great breed of dog! They are small/medium dogs and are hypo allergenic. They really don't shed, and they are friendly, lovable lap dogs. They are great with kids and other dogs, and I can tell you that you will fall in love with these soft white canines!!!

The right pet for your family would be a mini wiener dog.prefer a puppy.that way your family will have a tight bond with the little guy.they have short hair and sheds alittle.

A Basset Hound is the best kind especially the puppy, their playful, cute, small, and adorable! Only if you don't like hairy dogs.
Or a Lhasa Apso, but has a lot of hair.
