Start > Run - type in MSCONFIG and click OK.
Click the Startup tab. Uncheck anything you don't want to run.
WARNING - WARNING - WARNING
DANGER, Will Robinson!
If you don't know what you're doing, you can VERY EASILY mess up your computer to where it doesn't work playing around with MSCONFIG. BE CAREFUL. Don't make wholesale changes, and keep a log of what you change so you can change it back if you need to.

There are a few ways of doing this, one is Msconfig, (type msconfig in the run box, then run). That will allow you to stop some of the processes from starting up.
Another way, for windows processes (such as the server processes that Pro and 2000 use) you can go to your control panel, then go to Admin tools, then services and turn of certain services you will not be using (Make sure you know what you are turning on and off).
You can also edit your registry, which I recommend the least if you don't know what you are doing. You can find detailed tutorials online for editing your registry.
Also, uninstalling and setting "Do not startup with Windows" or something in those lines, for the programs is a simple way.
Certain processes CAN NOT be ended, such as svchost.exe because these are Windows processes that are critical to it running. You can play around by selecting the processes and hitting CTRL-E to end them. The ones that windows says are critical and can not be ended will be ones to leave alone.

Unfortunately, you cannot do this from the Task Manager (which you opened with CTRL+ALT+DEL). However, if you can manage to decode the process name to a specific program, you can try this:
Click Start->All Programs and look for a folder called Startup. This is a list of shortcuts that will be run whenever you start your machine. You can right-click any of these and delete them, which will cause that process NOT to run when you next start up.
Hope that helped.

hmm..look...i didn't get ur massage well, but if u want to remove some programs from start up u have many choices like change the option of the program itself, or if u have any program can edit the start up programs, or ( try not use this ) remove them from the registry...
but if u was talking about some files, servers or small programs that run when ur computer start..often they aren't explicit for u & u don't know what they r...they will be either some programs must be loaded to make ur windows or an installed program start OR a viurse, trojan ..some thing bad like that....
& they u can remove them from the register( but here u must know what u do )

from start menu --> run >> type "msconfig" >> then enter
go to startup and uncheck all programs listed there that you do not want to start.
Also you might stop some services that start automaticaly by start menu > run > "services.msc" > enter ; then right click on the ones you do not want to start anymore chose "properties" and set them to start "manually";
but if you do not know what you are doing i do not reccomand you to work on services. (you can stop some vital services and your computter cannot start or some features , as internet access or printing might not work)
