Pugs are GREAT!!!!

Start by going to the AKC and finding their breeder list.

Or narrow it down better by going to Pug websites (pugs.com, pugs.org) and getting recommendations on breeders in your area.

Then, check out the breeders themselves. Meet the parents. Make sure they abide by the Breeder Code of Ethics (health checks and guarantees, etc.). If you like the breeder and you like the pup, go for it. :)

Another idea is to check out breed rescue groups (start with Petfinder.com). That's how we found my sister's 2 year old black female pug, Ruby. She's a purebred, a sweetheart, and because she wasn't a puppy she cost about 400 bucks instead of the typical 1500-2000 you'd pay at a reputable breeder.

Whatever you do, don't buy a pug from a pet store (they get them from puppy mills, where female pugs are basically made to breed over and over until they are "used up"), or from people advertising in the newspaper or penny saver. They don't test their pups for genetic disorders or temperament, and you can end up with a very sick dog.

Can I make one more suggestion? Pugs are very happy in twos (if you have no other dogs or cats)... you may want to get two of them. Twice the clowning, twice the mischief, twice the pugness. ;)

I adopted mine from www.petfinder.com. While it is quite a pickle to find pure-bread pugs, it is almost impossible to find pug puppies. I got lucky, mine was 2 when i adopted him. You can find young ones.
