Without fail at least once a week I'm falling asleep and I guess it's when I'm just slipping into sleep I always dream that I'm falling it ranges from slipping off the curb to falling off of the train platform. Before I hit the ground though I wake up and my arms and legs jut out as if i were really falling. I wanna look this up but I don't know what to call it. If anyone knows the name of this and why it happens and more importantly if it's common or not that would really help.

I read some time back it has something to do with muscle tone. Even when you're asleep your muscles maintain a certain amount of tension but that every once in a while you muscles will relax that tension and your nervous systems reports to your brain that you are falling. The brain then sends out a message to your muscles "HEY! TIGHTEN UP A BIT FELLOWS!!!!" ...and this is the flex from the muscles that wakes you up.

I don't know why it happens, and I don't know what it's called, but I do know that it's very common. As a mother who rocked her 3 babies, I can also tell you that I think babies dream something similar. Maybe not necessarily falling, because they wouldn't have that association, but definately something they dreamed caused them to have the same physical reaction that you and everyone else seems to describe.

It's called sleep paralysis. It is a state of interrupted sleep were you are awakened mid dream but your body remains disconnected and paralyzed as it normally is during sleep. As a result, many people experience different sorts of hallucinations such as floating above themselves, falling, and even alien abduction.

you could be stressed out and it's taking a toll on your dreams. i read once that when you're stressed out you have constant re-occuring nightmares.
