I don't know for fact, but I am pretty sure you won't be on guard duty for 6 years. I would think its 2-3 years. Such as being a recruiter, drill instructer or being on embassy duty. These are in the Marines but all the branches have simliar situations.

Arlington is in Virginia, but it is at Fort Meyers, not Fort Belvoir. If you want to be aassigned to the cemetery, I presume you mean to the ceremonial units, which is the 3rd Infantry, Old Guard. You can enlist for up to eight years, with a minimum of 3 years active duty, but I think the guarantee of a unit of choice only applies for one year after the training. Check with a recruiter to make sure.

The total enlistment for any soldier entering the U.S. Military is a total of 8 years. If you spend 4 years in Germany, which is the general length of time you spend in Germany, then you have another 4 years to go. You can either reinlist or spend that time in reserves. If you get stationed in Korea, Iraq, Hawaii, Republic of Georgia, or Diego Garcia...those tours are called Hardship tours and they last one year. All domestic bases including Alaska are 4 year tours.
