I think different styles work for different people. But if you ever find yourself in a situation like that, don't stick to one particular martial art; you can also pick up on what you learned from other sources.
There are five important things to remember: Nose, throat, gut, groin, knee-- those are the most vulnerable areas. Also, the wrist is the weakest spot in the human body. Use those to your advantage as best as you can.
Me personally, I'm a black belt in TKD, but I have learned a few throws (and made up a few on my own) and I would like to learn some judo or some other martial arts where they teach throws and submission holds. If I was ever in a street fight, I'd use what I know, and whatever else worked.

Thank you Kris for mentioning us. But Kajukenbo may be hard to find. Because so few people actually stay long enough to get a Black Belt, there aren't as many qualified Kajukenbo instructors as there are in other more popular martial arts. And most Black Belts don't even bother to open up schools because there is such a high dropout rate that it is very difficult to break even with a commercial school. And there are some Kajukenbo instructors who make the training easier than it should be in order to keep students. But if you do find a hardcore or an extremely hard core Kajukenbo school, you will be learning the Hawaiian street fighting art. But I must warn you that the training is brutal, violent, painful and dangerous. For the beginning student as well as for the intermediate and advanced students. The average stay at a Kajukenbo school is about a week or two before the student quits. If there is a hardcore Kajukenbo school in your area, look into it. But you have to know what you are getting into first. And getting beaten up in the class is considered part of the training, it is to desensitize the student to real violence.

Violence is the tool of the ignorant. That being said Western boxing is great start but in my opinion 99% of all street fights end up on the ground so BJJ is the best all around for the average Joe, the key is not to be an average Joe, to be well versed in several different disciplines, be a complete fighter not so one dimensional.

There are three stages of a real life fight that you have to consider. There is a different martial art that is good for each of these stages.
Stage 1 - Avoiding the attacker and ending the situation without an attack, only with defense.
Aikido - throws and locks designed to immobilize an opponent by using his weight and momentum against him.
Stage 2 - Defend and attack. Ending the situation by using blocks and attacks.
Karate - Uses blocking and attacking to end a situation by taking out the opponent before things get out of control.
Stage 3 - Ground Work. The fight gets out of your control and goes to the ground.
Brazilian Ju-Jitsu - There is no better ground fighting technique than Gracie BJJ. Lets you lock, hold and break opponent. Sort of like wrestling but without the rules.

think its the fighter not the style that counts , but if your going to look at styles you need something that covers it all . Stand up striking, clinch, throwing, ground work and fitness
Think that's why all the fighters in UFC & Pride are mixed martial arts fighters,
A bit of Jujitsu and Muy thai, sounds like a good mix to me

muay thai kick boxing, and brazillian jujitsu. The combitnation is proven very effectively. Sad to say but UFC and King of the Cage are closest your going to see to legal street fighting. And its proven that those two are the most easy to weild while fighting any other type of fighting!

Krav Maga, it was developed by Israeli Special Forces and it uses, simple and effective moves that are more function than form. It also encourages fighting dirty and using anything as a weapon, as well as seriously injuring or killing your opponent instead of just hurting him a little to earn some points.

Grapplers almost always win MMA. I'd say krav maga, braz Jiu Jitsu, maybe muay thai. Get ready to go on the ground though
