You're the one who controls the food! Control it! If you don't, you dog will have health problems and won't live as long as you'd like! He'll be like a new dog when he's lost a few pounds. Do get suggestions from your vet, but cut back on his food. If you have any other animals, make sure he's not eating food from their dishes.

I own 4 chihuahua's and it's easy to over feed them. You love your dog and want to spoil it by giving it treats or letting them eat because they seem hungry. First of all stop feeding your chi human food. Human food can cause bigger problems then just weight such as pancreatis. Second if you give your chi treats chose a smaller treat and break it into smaller pieces. You don't need to give your chi a lot to spoil it, you have to remember they are small and they have tiny tiny stomachs. Third you need to put your chi on a good healthy dog food. I use Innova brand dog food. I get it at a pet store and it's a little more expensive then the one's you buy at the grocery store but there's many benefits to it. First my chi's don't eat as much because the food doesn't contain as many fillers as the cheaper or less expensive brands. I have one chi that is 7 pounds (once 10 and overweight) and he gets 1/8th of a cup 2 times a day. I have a 4.5 pound chi that gets an 1/8th of a cup 2 times a day also (she's more active because she's a puppy) then I have a 5 1/2 pound chi that gets 3/4 of an 1/8th of a cup 2 times a day because she needs to loose a pound. My last one is a 3 1/2 pound chi that gets 3/4 of an 1/8th of a cup 2 times a day because she's a puppy also and very active. When winter comes and they exercise less I will have to adjust how much they are getting because it will be too much. The second benefit of the Innova dog food is they poop less because again there are less fillers in it and the food is being used in their bodies instead of processed through and wasted. Innova dog food is the closest thing to a raw diet without being raw, it's full of veggies, meats, cottage cheese and good stuff. My dogs coats are shinier then ever also. Innova comes in a few types, the first type I tried was Innova Evo (in a silver bag) but my dogs didn't like it because it had a lot of fish in it (I recommend that for dogs such as alaskan malamutes who like fish), the type I use now comes in a green bag & is just Innova. If you can't find it at a local pet store then go to www.naturapet.com to find some where near you that you can buy it. Remember to weigh your dog frequently and adjust the amounts as needed.

First off rule out any health problems with your vet.
A dog with thyroid problems will have weight issues.
While you are at the vet ask him/her advice on weight loss.

If he checks out healthy and your vet has no advice (highly doubtfull - but just in case) then I would take his daily ration of food and portion is out in two meals (one at breakfast one at dinner).
Make sure that you are using a high end dog food - not just food you can get at the grocery store, Fleet Farm, or discount store (I like Eagle, Innova, and Solid Gold).
Make sure that you are using dog food and do not give him table scraps.
Do not leave the food out - 20 minutes and that is it.
If he doesn't finish, don't worry he can stand to miss a meal or two.
Make sure that you are not over treating him.
Dog treats have TONS of calories.
Carrots are healthy for dogs and can be used as dog treats if you need them, cheerio's can be used too.
Make sure you take him on long walks every day and play with him in the house.
You can double his exercise when playing ball with him in the house by throwing the ball down the stairs.
Burns up more calories getting back up them than running flat on the living room floor.
Hope this helps.

Put the dog on a diet. Don't feed snacks, don't feed human food, and make sure it gets exercise. Your vet can tell you how much food the dog should be getting in a day.

Look on the back of the food sack and it should tell you how much to feed him. Cut back on that amount. And exercise him. Take him for walks. don't feed him any extra treats. Good luck.

Oh how sweet. Just call a Vet. & ask what type of dog food you dog should be on, for weight loss, or for maintinance.
