Please do not use moth balls. They may be effective and they are extremely toxic for your cat.

You can use some wire netting you get at a hardware store. Even the soft nylon netting might work and it might be hard to tuck securely around the planter boxes. Both will enable you to eater the plants and kitties will not like the feel of the netting or the wire on their feet.

It might be inconvenient for you to do so, but dust the soil in the planter box with cayenne pepper. Makes it less inviting to the cats.

what you do is you go and get a bb gun and you sit outside and wait for a cat to come along. and when they do you pop them with a bb and after hitting a couple of cats a few times they will stop getting into your planter boxes and coming in your yard all together. and its another way to get out frustrations!!!! :)

Depends. Are these stray/feral cats, or is one of your neighbors ignorant enough to let housecats roam?

Tame housecats will generally respond to cayenne pepper or mothballs. Stray cats won't. The only way to handle strays is to make the flower beds inaccessible (barbed wire works nicely) or trap/poison/shoot the cats.

Poisoning and shooting cats is illegal in most areas, so traps and fencing may be your only option. Personally I would rather shoot the morons who let their cats run free and don't spay/neuter.

Thats why these "forums" are useless, they are full of idiots with horrible advice! Get spiky plastic netting, cut to size, no more problems! Don't be shooting and poisoning and using mothballs!! If you do, I hope you end up in prison for animal cruelty!! Morons!

I have heard that mothballs scattered around will do the trick and won't hurt the plants. Animals do not like the smell.
