On the side of my stairs opposite the stair railing, there is a half wall, and some dated wooden bars (with slats) on top of it. We're currently renovating, and in addition to tearing up the old carpet on the stairs, we would like to remove the bars, and paint the ledge on top of the half wall.

However, the top of the half wall is at the same level as one of the steps and it could be unsafe to have an open space above it.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can update that area. Or some suggestions for what can go there besides the wood?

P.S. I've posted some pictures of this in my yahoo 360 album. If you would like a visual reference you can click on my name, then click on the link to my 360 page (for those who don't know).

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

From looking at your pictures, it does not seem to be a safety risk to remove the bars. I would take away the bars and paint the wood ledge to look like black marble or even a white marble. (faux finish) Then I would buy a gorgeous planter the length of the ledge and fill it with ivy or whatever you like. It looks like a real opportunity to show your creative side and dress up an area with something unexpected. Good luck and have fun! With your white walls, you virtually have a blank canvas to do whatever you can imagine!

All right, just so you know, I renovate repossessed houses. I would imagine that your dinning room isn't going to be white, at least I would hope you were going to spruce it up a bit, add a splach of colorwith dinner and all. Depending on the theme and since it somewhat separates the dinning room I would go white or black. If the trim in your house is going to be white then it will fit right in for a fresh clean look. If not them black to set the mood for dinner. Just use a primer, preferable oil based so you only need one coat to cover the wood then add you color. I think it will look awesome and really add something to you dinning room.

That is tacky- I would suggest this- use a 4x4 Deco post on the outside end, then a half cut on the Wall- on the cieling use a 1x6 routed on the edge with a sculpture edge. Butt the post to that- Maybe one more post in the middle to make you feel safe.

Hmm.. yeah, thats pretty ugly. What about a diagonal handrail? It would still need "bars" to support it, but they wouldnt go to the ceiling, just up to the handrail, and they could be better looking than the plain cylinders you have.

Paint them the same colour as the wall. They will disappear.
