That question indicates an inferiority complex. The person who did that would be very unpolite, but you don't need to think necessarily that they are talking about you

No, I don't do that. I think it is highly impolite. In fact, I think it's rude even to start speaking in another language that someone else knows better, unless they iniate doing so, unless it life and death or something!! I would only switch when questioned in the other language. (For example, you know English and French, but the person you are speaking knows English poorly, but is a native Frenchman. You continue speaking in English anyway, unless questioned in French.)

Honestly, yes! I have done that in the past, not necessarily to "talk bad" about someone but just to make a comment in Portuguese (my first language) or something like that. And a few people have asked me what I was saying and why couldn' I just say it in plain English. LOL

I think we as humans have a tendency to be overly-concerned with what other people think and/or say about us. But more often than not when you encounter someone who is speaking another language near you IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU! It's just that sometimes a person's mother-tongue is just easier and quicker to speak. =)

I was taught not to speak Spanish (or German, for that matter) around people that don't understand the language, so that they won't assume that I'm talking bad about them and try to start stuff. It's just being polite...

I think that is very rude for ppl to do that if they can speak English. No one is stupid enough to not know when they are being talked about. One of these days someone is going to understand what is being said and pop them in the mouth.

In Toronto that's not possible. Not matter where you are you'll always hear as many different languages as people happen to be around. I speak different languages and... well, I sadly learned to be polite (euphemism for hypocritical)

U should have learned when u were younger not to say anything if u couldn't say anything nice about a person and u treat others as u would want to be treated. Give respect and u shall receive the same amount back in return.......the bible says that god don't like ugly and it is he that will judge u by not what u do and don't do,but by your heart.

Sometimes, but not because I'm afraid but because some expressions just don't translate, but I'll also speak English so they can understand. I only do it if they were talking about me, not just to be mean.

I have a choice of two other languages but I would not be that rude. It's not only about them; it's about ME. I choose to be above that
