I'm curious as to how very tall, or very heavy people are accommodated in coffins.. My father in law was almost 7 ft tall and it really looked like he was laid out in a normal coffin but this would mean the necessity of bending his legs at the knees.. It may be creepy, but I wonder how this is handled.. Same for someone very very heavy, say 550 lbs... They would be almost impossible to handle with normal equipment..

Interesting question, shocked me when I first seen it, but this a fact that some families have to deal with. Coffins do come in different sizes. We had a gentleman that 6'4" about 450lbs. The coffin had to be shipped in from the warehouse, because we live in a small town and they can't afford to keep special ordered sizes in stock. They had to reinforce the gurney, and they couldn't push him to the grave site, they finally ended up driving the hearse right next to the grave. It was a sight, I will never forget. They still had a time with all the men getting him to platform thing to lower him into the grave.
I had a friend to pass, she weighed in at 375, and was wide. They to special order her from the warehouse, had to have it made special because she was short and so wide that she couldn't fit in the x-long coffins. I am afaird they had to squeeze her in it. I can't believe I said that. I am sorry, but they had two gurneys strapped together for her. Bless her heart, she was a wonderful woman, but she was huge. I wasn't able to go to the graveside for hers, can't imagine how that worked out. I am imagine your Father-in-law's coffin was x-long. It just didn't seem long because it was laying down. If it had been straight up, it would have seemed large. But you are right, if very very heavy people they do have prepare more, even the platform at the gravesite has to reinforced. Good question! Some people might thinks it's morbid, but it's a interesting question, a big change from of these stupid ones people ask.........
God bless us all...............

Funeral Directors have NEVER cut off the feet to make them fit, caskets can be ordered larger to accomodate tall or obese people. They come 2 inches wider, 2 inches longer for every X (i.e 1X, 2X). Hope this helps and don't believe any silliness about removing appendages!

Caskets come in many shapes and sizes. Yes there are over sized (both length and width). You most likely will find the oversized caskets made from wood.

They used to cut off the feet, they'll probably make you a custom coffin.
