This question is based on an answer to an immigration question I responded to and is based on family experience. My dad/grandfather immigrated to the US from Germany during the1930's and were only too willing to exchange their language and many customs in order to become Americans and enjoy all the benefits that entailed. They wanted to become Americans and known as Americans first and foremost(over their German heritage)for all the US offered them economically, politically, etc. that their original home country did not.Why do immigrants from many places now wish to come here and live in isolated communites(language and culturally)rather than embrace the larger American society? Why do so many immigrants now try to maintain as much of their heritage from the places that were so poor to them they needed to emigrate for political, social or economic reasons when, traditionally, immigrants used to come here to "assimilate" into the American "Melting Pot?"Just curious when and why the change?

I commend you and your family. There is nothing wrong with maintaining your culture but, at the same time, you must accept the culture and language of the U.S. Why come here if you are going to try to change it? Didn't you come here for what America is?

My grandparents came here from Italy for only one reason.

I am very sure that reason was to make enough money so they could go back to Italy and live comfortably.

Many immigrants, past and present, just view America as the money capital of the world.

In centuries past, the Europeans thought there were gold in the streets of New York.

When they came over, they were surprised that they had to work hard to make money in America.

So, they were stuck living here, and soon adopted the American customs, all the while wishing they were back home enjoying those traditions.

The new immigrants have the same thoughts.

They don't like the American customs, find it very appalling and contrary to how they were brought up...respect for elders, dignity of every person regardless of rank, self respect, family unit intact...do you see any of these qualities in America?

Therefore, being of German ancestry, I would be proud of where you came from knowing many great scientists came from there, and contributed to the America we now know.

I hope I answered your question as best it needed to be answered.

Thankyou for this opportunity to express my views on the subject.

It all changed with FDR. Ushering in the era of big government, the US was no longer the land of opportunity, where you were free to make of life what you could. It was now the land of entitlement, a place so rich that one can live well on the public largesse.

Not only is there no longer a need to assimilate and succeed, it's actually discouraged. Why work so hard at learning a new language and a new job when such a huge percentage of the proceeds are just taxed away and given to people who don't do that?

Isn't it better to do as the government wishes you to? Vote for them and get a check.

Notice now that most illegal aliens entering the US are from the southern hot climates. People from northern climates have a different set of values and a different way of thinking. Whether you are black, Arab or Mexican certain things about you are similar that are different from the northern climate peoples. This statement is not ment to be racist but is based on factual observation. Even the smallest countries in the north seem to be self sufficient but even the largest cities and countries in the south seem to be third world nations. It's not about race, but what is it about warm climates that makes people think differently?

Because the ones coming here today,do NOT want to be americans! It's as simple as that. They want to USE our country and our resources, in order to get rich, but instead of contributing anything to this country, they send it all back to mexico! They have no loyalty for america! All you have to do is remember which flag they were flying!

What an awsome question!!

I have used this question many times to the people that call us racists for saying it.
If your homeland was so great,WHY DID you leave?
The ILLEGALS came here uninvited and then complain we don't give them enough.
I say go home!
They are ungrateful, greedy, spiteful, law breakers and we don't need any more of them.
I think our country had enough without them.

That is the most intelligent question I have seen posted today. You make a very valid point, and I'm looking forward to some of the answers! Glad to see someone else has some pride about being a citizen!

Exactly the same with my family! I don't see why they want to be in America if they're trying so hard to make it like the country they fled from.
