My partner, of late, decided it would be a good idea to take Wolfgang to the Gulf of Mexico. He said, "there's a lot of sand there, and waves, and, like, he can chase the waves and it'll be fun..." I thought, "your momma dropped you on the head once too often," but went along with it, as usual, when he gets these goofy ideas. Wolfgang did not have a good time. Your experience?

Much of my family has moved to Rockport, Texas, which is on the Gulf Coast. So when we go visit the 'rents, that's where we go. Loki was very unsure about the whole thing the first time we went. Lots of strange smells, strange people and animals, the grass wasn't the grass he was used to. He didn't seem to mind the sand that much, just one giant litterbox, I guess. After having gone a few more times, he is much more comfortable about the whole thing, which is good, since we are moving there next year. He travels real well, though. And like many Bengals, he is fascinated by water. He did not, however frolick in the waves, lol.

I used to live in Hawaii. We lived in an 8th story apartment building, so my kitty couldn't really enjoy the outside too much.

I used to take him to a fairly secluded beach. Molokai Point, I believe, not certain it's been so long ago. He had a blast running and playing in the sand. He'd go near the water and then run back and play in the sand.

He really enjoyed it. Now if I'd tried to throw him in the water, I'm sure he'd never want to go back.

I wouldn't take a cat to a crowded beach though. They'd be scared of all the people to start with.

Hi there...cats like the prefer the comfort of familiarity in their surroundings. They are also territorial so taking them to an environment which is unfamiliar may create discomfort to them, which you've witnessed with Wolfgang. As humans we have a habit of anthropomorphisizing our pets--personifying our ideals believing what the kitty would enjoy like ourselves. However...cats can be trained to become desensitized to strange environments through gradual exposure to the area over weeks. Whenever people move with their pets it's best to keep them indoors to get used to the changes, then let them out under supervision to help them acclimate to the new area. Sudden changes disorients them which is why we hear of many stories of lost pets who try trek many miles to find their families.

Unless the cat lives near the beach like one of the other answers...your partner sounds like they are thinking about what they want vs what a cat would enjoy...

That must have been a horribile expierience for that cat. How could you go along with that stupid idea? I can't believe you didn't stick up for what is right and say heck no, i am not taking my cat there. Geez!

Well no but I don't think that is bad because its not like against the rules and its not like you would let go of your cat and mak him drown.
