Is 6.1 MegaPixels a good amount?

Wicked Mickey has given a good, to the point explanation. If you know about film photography, we can compare pixels to grain. Fewer pixels will look more grainy. More pixels will look like finer grain.

6.1MP is perfectly adequate for almost any purpose in digital photography, as explained in the excellent answer by Biz Martee.

It depends what you plan to do with the photos. You really need to get into the larger mega pixel if you are planning to print large scale photos. 6.1 should be sufficient for roughly a 16x20 photo. If you don't plan to do large scale then you can save some money and buy a lower mega pixel camera. 3 to 4 should be fine for standard size prints.

It describes how many points of light the charged coupled device can recorde. The more pixels, the more resolution (the sharper) your photo. Mega means "million".
