I think it does. We need to be involved in what our government is doing. It is to be a government of the people, by the people. If we make the false assumption our elected leaders are looking out for our interests, we get the short end of the stick again and again.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If we do not speak up and demand what we want, we will never get it. That said, I don't think the government should be expected to take care of our needs. But they should help ensure we are playing on a level playing field and that its citizens are not taken advantage of or harmed by others.

Being a good citizen means helping others and helping out in the community.
Watching the news makes you a good citizen ONLY to the network you are watching, as it helps their ratings.
Reading the paper ONLY helps the newspaper business.
What about people who help out in their community to the best of their ability, yet do not have money to buy a paper or get a working T.V. Would that disqualify them from good citizenship? No, of course not.

Not on the News, all ways are good !
You must at least look at what I send you, very valuable, relibale informative material, in alternative of officials News, that I think are propaganda, for most part... :
They are the Illuminatis, and they own you,
This is the New World Order, and it is your future if the world don't wake up :
And this is what Bush’s minions had to say in 2000;-
"Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor"
Project for the New American Century (2000)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_for_the_New_American_Century
“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
Hermann Göring(Nazi) 1946 Nuremberg Trials
"We are on the verge of a global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will accept the New World Order."
David Rockefeller: Statement to the Untied Nations Business Council in September 1994
"For more than a century, ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with other around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure - one world, if you will. If that is the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it." David Rockefellers memoirs (2002)

Loyalty to the country by working well and pay taxes,
Patriotism by respecting the government and state,
Do not follow the news but make it only as reference, and
Obey what government legally wants.

Being a "good citizen" means NOT paying any attention to what you typically call the "news", but go for some reality, like "The Washington Times" as opposed to the washington post, and go to www.MediaResearchCenter.org. The "news" as we typically call it is so anti-American as to beg for a "call-to-arms" for all truly patriotic Americans. God Bless you.

Yes, how else will you be able to participate in your government? Remember - the United States is a Republic not a Democracy. Big difference. Look it up. If you're not informed, you can't help. Helping is your DUTY. Bashing your Country, while allowed, is not a helpful thing to do.

That's just a small part of it. A good citizen upholds the law and makes positive contributions to his/her community and sets a good example for others.

That is an important part of it, but only part. If you see what is happening, but do nothing, then you are still not a good citizen.
