There have been Marriages around for much longer than God was even thought of. Christianity doesn't have a lock on marriage. In fact the "to death do us part" in the marriage vows is kind of hypocritical in the Christian text because if they truly believe in eternal life, then death would have no effect.
However, when you get down to the core of what marriage is, it's a promise by 2 people to love and cherish each other. This promise can be made without religion involved, and can be performed by an official of the state. Therefore, 2 Atheist can marry without ever touching any religious doctrine.

From New Haven Colony, Connecticut Blue Laws written in 1655 by Gov. Theophilus Eaton with the assistance of the Rev. John Cotton:
"No gospel Minister shall join people in marriage; the magistrates only shall join in marriage, as they may do it with less scandal to Christ's Church"
Even in early times marriage was obviously seen as a governmental not a religious institution. Most Atheists choose a JP or a Judge and that is entirely legal and they do not fake their vows as there is no mention of deities in them.
I go married in a church but then at the time of my marriage I was a Pagan and not yet an atheist. My husband is a christian. If I had to do it over I'd get married by a J.P.

City hall, marriage wasn't created by god anyway, at least none of the modern gods, it's been round much longer than any modern religion. I don't think it woulod be faking ur vows anyway as long as u dont mention god and actually believe what u are saying about the person u are saying it too.

God is imaginary.
Marriage is a social construct created by real humans not an imaginary super-being.
Therefore there is no problem in two atheists getting married.
Marriage vows do not have to include God.

Marriage was not created by your god. People from different cultures all over the world celebrate marriage, and some of them have never even heard of your god.
I personally plan on getting married in a courthouse. No reason for your god to be any part of it.

"God" (whichever one your talking about) did not create marriage. Man did. What vow exactly would an atheist be faking?

You must be new to the united states.
Allow me to let you in on a secret, you don't need to get married by a priest nor in a church, and you do not need to make a vow to god.

I thought that marriage was a union that can be sanctified by the church and also done in a civil non-dominion ceremony thats legally binding too. As to whether it was created by God, i disagree. I think each person regardless of their religion should be able to get married - its a symbol of their relationship involving noone else (including Him upstairs) unless they choose to allow them to.

Marriage used to be a very religious ceremony and tradition. But, now it's not as much religious as social event. Therefore, it can be performed by the City Hall or Court or any other governmental branch.
