It's an operational theory of how the universe works. Also, gravity defines whather the force that pulls things together as gravity. We don't know whether it's the warping of space time or massless particles called gravitons. So really, there's lots of theories, and you can only believe one or the other or some mishmash of them...

there's only one here who understands stuff about gravity and that's "whoawhoamrsl".

its obvious all others answered the question with ignorance. so here's another fact: gravity was already talked about even before Newton was born(the story that Newton "discovered" gravity is popular but grossly incorrect). Theory of gravity therefore is not a fact but a mathematical model of how gravity possibly works. Einstein's theory of relativity is more accurate in predicting the effects of gravity than the Newtonian method which makes it a better theory.

I get it. LOL, in the real world someone might call something that they are guessing about a theory but in the scientific world a guess is called a hypothesis, a theory is what they have when they have proven their hypothesis

according to dictionary.reference.com
Theory :
A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.

If your cynical quip were based upon a valid observation it might be rated as having some quality.

Not all 'theories' have the same degree of evidence or backing to them. Some are more solid than others.

Creationists know that gravity is only a theory and that there is no evidence for it.

This explains how they are all floating around in cloudcuckooland without their feet firmly on the ground.

This is a retort generally used against, "evolution is just a theory". Of course as you probably know, theory are based on sound scientific evidence and can be tested. They can be observed and there effect can be seen. Conversly God cannot be tested or observed.

gravity is not a theory.....the way gravity works is a theory..we don't really know how it works, we only know that it's there.....what you should be asking yourself is why should we believe in time and does it exist?

Don't believe in Gravity, it's a natural force. You probably obey gravity though, even if you deny it.

It's a law of physics, meaning it's a proven fact.......not just a theory.
