The one you enjoy the most. There is no "best" red wine between varietals, and even someone claiming a particular Pinot Noir is better than all the other Pinot Noirs is bit suspect. Enjoy what you enjoy.

I personally enjoy Merlot and Pinot Noir because others are too dry or too sweet for me. These 2 are a nice in-between to me.
But I agree with the first answerer.

The most expensive red wines come from the Burgundy region of France, though some French Bordeaux wines are nearly as expensive. They are the most expensive because the real experts find them the best. "Red Wine for Dummies"; in spite of its title, it is a great reference book, if you would like to learn more about red wine.

it really depends on what you're looking for...like just to drink casually or to pair with food? but Mondavi is very nice...i met the man and his wife personally, so sweet! but that's beside the point. Merlots tend to be bland ish.....is you don't want it too sweet and don't want something to bitter or dry...Merlot is the way to go.

i particularly enjoy blends..ie. Shiraz/ Syrah (same thing they just call it something different due to it's location) Clarets are great esspecially Francis Ford Copolla Claret.

go to BevMo or Cost Plus they have a great selection from all over the world!!

It really does depend a lot on what you are eating along with it. Being from california I am partial to Pinot Noir. It goes great with Cal cuisine. Bold enough to stand up to meat...still can drink along a nice salad.

All those are fine wines. However you have left one out that I think you absoutely must try before settling on a best. Shiraz. Look for one from Australia, really great wine at terrific prices. I can find Australian Shiraz in my supermarket starting around $5 for a 750 ml bottle. Yeah, I know, the wine snobs won't believe you can get anything good at that price. Try it. I think you'll add it to your list.

Frontera Merlot from Chile by Concha Y Tora. Most of the price of wine is real estate prices being passed on. Don't let price fool you.
