Set the incline to at least level 2 or higher. Start the treadmill at the lowest speed and let it go around a couple times before you step on. Then very gradually work your speed up. Do not set it at running speed until you are very comfortable with it first, and some people never do the running speed. Keep your hands on the safety bars. The first few times you'll be tired after 5-15 mins but you'll eventually be able to work up to longer workouts.

Also it helps the time pass by if you have music to listen to or a movie/tv show to watch while you're walking. Otherwise it is very easy to get bored.
