if you have nothing you are willing to die for then you truly have nothing to live for.

ooooooooo... I think that there's a lot of truth in that statement. It's also a very hard one to live by. In order to make it work, a person has to have something other than herself that is worth everything, and a lot of people feel they only have themselves. I like to think that parents would be willing to die for their children and that most people have someone in their life for whom they would be willing to die.

The follow up question is this: If you are not willing to die for anything (a person, a cause, an ideal), then what is it about your very own life that is more important than all of those things? Is it possible for a person's life to be the most important thing to them? If so, it makes the statement a paradox.

Yes, however it doesn't mean you have to actually die for what you are willing to die for. Most of us will just be called upon to develop integrity - or to live what we are willing to die for in a quiet, day-to-day manner for the length of our lives.

I've thought about that line before. I'm not 100% convinced its true, but it certainly is a powerful message.
