The answers so far are perfect. I would add that to a certain extent, it's normal for cats to throw up occasionally - they'll put almost anything in their mouths sometimes (like babies). However, if your cat consistently has hair balls, try combing, brushing, or just petting your cat. The previous advice of hairball medicine or hairball-controlling cat food should also be followed.

It will sound like it is dry-heaving (I know that sounds disgusting, but that's almost exactly what it sounds like). You may see little bits of food come up when it is doing this - to ease its discomfort you can buy "hairball" medications and food from your local pet store.

Kitty sits with front legs out to the sides, neck down with the head straight forward and:
Hohrrk!!
Hroooohhkk!
Hoohrrk!
(Repeat at random several times, then...)
Hraalllphhh!!! and it barfs up what looks like a balled-up sock.

The unmistakeable sound that goes something like "gluck-gluck-gluck-gluck" while jerking the head forward and back. Anyone who's ever had a long-ish haired cat knows that sound all too well.

My cat who's name is Miss Kitty isn't bothered with such things. ..she spends her days mainly outside chasing small critters.
