These dogs(Whippets) were bred to hunt by sight, coursing game in open areas at high speeds. Although one can find numerous representations of small greyhound-like hounds in art dating back to Roman times, the modern whippet was created by working-class people of northern England by crossing greyhounds with several other breeds, including the Italian Greyhound and a now-extinct long-legged terrier. These small coursing hounds were cheaper to feed and house than greyhounds but were very handy at providing rabbits for the pot. They also were used to provide sport on nonworking days as their owners enjoyed racing them against each other. The modern look of the breed was created by upper-class English dog fanciers, who bought the best-looking whippets and bred them selectively to appear most similar to a miniature greyhound.

They are totally different breeds. Italian greyhounds are in the toy group, not hound group and they are about 1/4 the size of a whippet.

Yes, they are two different breeds. They look similar but do have differences. Whippets generally weigh about 30 lbs, IGs about 10 lbs. There are head and topline differences as well. A really large IG and a very small Whippet will not look the same, you can still tell what they are. Whippets are generally very lazy dogs, and IGs are very busy, the temperments are different.
The picture by my name are two of my Whippets.

The are different types of dog.
Greyhounds are larger than whippets although they are both hunting dogs (ie hounds).
Whippets can come in many types and an Italian greyhound is just one type of greyhound.

Italian Greyhounds are Italian Greyhounds, and Whippets are Whippets. Similar, but not the same.

They are different breeds, but very very similar. Italian Greyhounds are smaller, if that helps any. Chek the AKC 'Complete Dog Book' (available on Amazon) for more details.

They are different breeds.
To prove this to your friend and to see a description of the breed standard go to www.akc.org (the American Kennel Club).
Whippets are larger and in the Hound Group, while I.G.s are in the Toy Group, and much smaller.
