The question starts with a straw man to say that the event of an earthquake is entirely wrong. God, who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, certainly could have stopped things from happening. For instance, He could have stopped Adam and Eve from bringing death into this world, but He did not. The earthquake could have been the result of this sin, the inevitable death groan of the world as it waits to be reborn, or it more likely was a way for God to teach.
Guaranteed that nothing happened that God did not want to happen, but there are things that we try to understand with our puny limited minds that we just can't. Who knows all the consequences of the earthquake, and what would happen without it. Only God does, and to think otherwise is arrogant presumption.

thats very limiting...to assume that earthquakes and massacres are all bad. there is a greater cycle of birth and death that one must grasp. death, even by the most saddening and unfortunately circumstances is the reality of life and therefore not void of the presence of God.
