I assume when you say "protect" your computer, you are talking about spyware, and anti-virus software. Here are the best of the two sharewares that I know:

free.grisoft.com AVG Antivirus Free Edition

These two are the best free software versions that are out there. I have used them for years, and have not gotten one virus, and they have caught quite a few before the damage was done! They are also the two that I hear the most recommended by many people I know that are also in the computer field. Happy computing!

i have been using AVG for a year its a free online virus scanner that really works and is really free. i also have spybot s&d for spyware removal and it works great too.
