Or is it a type of Post Tramatic Stress? It just seems that they have a lot in common. Thanks.

You're right they're both similar, PTS is a broader diagnosis and can apply to any major stress or issue while BWS is very specific and only applies to battered spouses.

BWS is unique from PTS because people with BWS usually have a very low self concept and low self esteem. They've been brainwashed, isolated, led to believe a set of circumstances that simply isn't reality by the abuser.

NO.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder refers to psychological pain that endures long after the actual traumatic situation has ended. So this might apply to a grown person who still suffers emotionally due to childhood abuse.

Battered Wife Synrome is primarily a legal defense used by lawyers whose clients either murder or severely disable their husbands. The idea behind it is that even though their lives were not in danger at the time they killed their husbands, they were scarred by years of abuse and thus could rightfully believe that their husband could kill them at any moment.

There may occassionally be some merit to this but it is a defense that has been used in several high profile cases to defend cold blooded murder. Lawyers....sigh.

They have a lot in common, but it's not the same.

Battered wife syndrome is much closer to Stockholm Syndrome.

Both involve anxiety and stress so they have that in common.
