you said: "Christians have the crusades Catholics have the inquisitions etc... "

U-m-m-
The crusaders were CATHOLIC, not Christian. There is a
difference, you know.

What's an "organized" religion, anyway?

Bible Christianity has plenty of organization; all one has to do to see this is to read the New Testament. Paul (and others) give instructions to churches throughout the epistles.

The history of a religion is the history of the people who claim it.
While you are busy reading about the blood shed in the name of Christianity, why not take a moment and read about some of the good things accomplished under that name as well?
But then, as human beings, we tend to relish the bloodshed...don't we?
the Crusades and the inquisitions were mostly Roman Catholic's doings, btw....

i do think that they were actually fought for religion, but in the name of religion. the whole goal was to gain power. there was coruption to no end, and we still see some of this corruption today, though we do not see the violence associtated with it. however, we can also look and see that those claiming a religion did not actually follow the religion, so by this, we can assess that by taking the religion out of the equation, that the persons or parties would still probably have done the same thing. so, lets not judge a religion based on people who did not follow the religions precepts.

religions are practiced by people

people are imperfect

this does not necessarily teach us anything about the efficacy or value or morality of any organized religion in particular or religion in general

however, your examples are particularly poor for the point you were presumeably trying to make

at the time, the crusades were moral, justifiable, and appropriate, and may well have made possible most of the technological, civil rights, and personal prosperity advances since

the "inquisitions" were mostly localized, politically driven events and not a policy of the catholic church

There is no such thing as a perfect religion. But this saying is true. That whoever confesses with his mouth That Jesus is Lord, and that God raised Him from the dead will be saved."

Jesus our Lord can sometimes take one of the worst sinners and make him/her into a child of God.

Well it certainly is not good, but not all is bad either.
History is best viewed with eyes to the future- acknowledge it is there- but strive to do much, much better.

I think they are very interesting. All religions have their bad periods and their good periods.
