There have been mistakes. The message of religion should be personal faith in a God of love, but people use religion for their own personal ambitions.
However, I am much more scared of godless societies that have such a record of mass murder that it pales against anything else.

i think organized religion in the past was just a way to make money...it was quite stupid actually

I don't think Buddhists ever went through a violent period like that.
