Our Prius gets 45-50 mpg in summer and 40-45 in winter. As long as you stay off the accelerator you will get better. I have averaged as high as between 50 and 55 mpg. Running the heater in the winter uses electricity which runs the engine more so mpg goes down (plus the winter weather conditions)

Depends on what your "real world" is. Mostly short trips, or long trips? Hot summers? Cold winters? Do you drive agressively, or do you coast a lot? Do you live in the flatlands or on a mountain? etc.

Find out what the expected MPG is on a given governmental fuel economy test cycle, on both your current vehicle, and on the Toyota Prius. Sites to check, depending where you live:
US: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/
Canada: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/transportation/personal/
UK: http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/
(the governmental test cycles are done at the same temperatures and are done the same vehicle to vehicle, so they are good at comparing one vehicle against another. However, few people actually drive like the test cycles, so an individual's actual fuel economy will differ from the published numbers.)

Calculate what your own "real world" MPG is on your current vehicle (use several tankfuls, using the gasoline fill amounts and the miles gone)

Calculate the % difference of your "real world" MPG on your current vehicle to the given governmental fuel economy test MPG.

Apply the same % difference to the same governmental test's MPG for the Toyota Prius, to get your expected "real world" fuel economy for your driving style, location, types of trips, etc.
