i work at this store in my town its called The Pharm and we have a pharmacy and some grocerys but no clothing.

but anyways i work back by video, lottery and ciggerets and i'm also a cashier back there too.

i have to answer the phone when no one is in the front office and i get the rudest people on the phone.

one guy asked me if we had any books of matches. i told him we did and then he asked how many so i went to look and when i got back on the phone with him and tried to explain they come in a package of so many books he wouldn't hear me out. so i told him "yes we have books of matches" then i hung up on him.
then you have actual customers who are rude to you when you try to scan things as quick as possible. i have to hand scan everything. then get mad when i can't cash out a gift card.
they don't understand somethings can't be done back here. like WIC and foodstamps.i do get the nice people who are patient and understanding how i have to do things.but y are peeps like this

I work in the hospitality industry so I know what you're talking about. People who are rude usually either plain ignorance or they are already have a bad day to begin with. To respond to the ignorance you have no other way but just ignore their lack of etiquettes/knowledge/being civilized. Just pretend that their ignorance don't bother you. Don't raise your voice, don't get upset. Apologize for the inconvenience (whatever it is that upsetting them) and offer a solution (i.e I apologize for the waiting but unfortunately we do not accept WIC/food stapms at our store however the Waley store next door does) If they still got upset / rude , take a deep breath and offer them to talk your supervisor/manager.
If you have lines at your cashier, just make sure that you acknowledge the people on the line and tell them that you'll be right with them as soon as possible. That way they feel that they're not being ignore.
I hope this will help you.. Good luck!

I worked at Wal-Mart for five and a half years, so I know what you're talking about. I think that most people know that the person behind the counter is told to not be aggressive with the customers and that customers are always right (yeah, right) and it brings out the bully in them.

It's kind of weird, because I have seen lots of otherwise normal people act horribly towards someone behind a cash register. I guess you could apply what I said above and say that it brings out a sense of power in people and so they do things they wouldn't normally do. I don't know. I really hated working cash registers. In all honesty, I didn't get an excessive number of mean people, I am just more of an introvert than an extravert and prefer to work on my own or one-on-one as opposed to with lots of people. That might be part of your problem, too. Then again, I don't know you, so I can't really say.

But like someone else said, you could always think of this as an incentive to find something better, by going to school or getting some kind of special training of some sort. ; )

Because people want everything done quickly. I used to be a cashier and I wish they could do what you or I did/do. They think it is easy but sometimes things happen that isn't your fault. I hate when people get mad at a person that has WIC because it does take a while to write that stuff down. The worst is when people throw change on the counter. That was me pet peeve. When people stuck out their hand I just threw it on the counter same way they did to me. Sorry I'm rambling but I know how you feel.

I don't know. I'm sorry to say it, but the majority of cashiers I encounter are pretty rude to the customers. I always try to be friendly with cashiers, but they tend to have sucky attitutudes. I don't understand it, I've been a waitress and a cashier and I never treated customers like that, and yes I did have rude customers that made me want to throw things at them. I think in general people are no longer raised with any manners or to give any thought to how others should be treated, that's why people are rude on both sides of the cash register, phone, etc. We're turning into a nation of a*sholes.

as societys gotten bigger people take less time to get to know each other, i.e. if the person serving you was a friend, you'd be more friendly towards them, as them how they are.
people don't see other people as "people" any more, noone feels the need to think more deeply about those around them. "the rude woman" who just pushed past you could be a mother who is frantically looking for their child, "the superficial girl obsessed with herself" could have learnt to be this way because she's found she only deserves love if shes pretty enough, "the rude cashier" may be really tired from having worked a 10 hour shift which is why they're not so chirpy...
in this self obsessed society, people also end up more inwardly focussed with their problems and don't end up seeking to support others.
there is no grace.

I am sorry you have such bozos for customers. Some people are very impatient and want to be waited on right away.

You seem to be handling customers just fine. Sometimes you just have to wait on them and get them out of the store.

These people are unhappy no matter where they go. And, they are taking out their unhappiness on you.

I remember working on a cash register (before cash cards, etc). I was very intimidated by the cash register- there was a lot of money in it and I was responsible for it!

Most people were very patient with me and some even helped me along. Then, there are the jerks who, no matter what, are making your life miserable.

Hang in there! Don't let the turkeys get you down.

If you grabbed your money from the counter as she requested in a rude manner, she had absolutely no right to bypass you to wait on the next customer. You should have reported her behavior to the manager on the spot, instead of allowing her to take someone else ahead of you. She must be a miserable b**** to waste the consumers time and give the business she is working for such a negative image. If I did not report her to the manager, I would surely not return to that place of business until she was removed from that job.

Beacause people don't care how they treat others behind the counter. I worked at a clothing store once and when I wouldn't return her clothes (that had NO tags and the items were very obviously washed) she threw a pen at my face. I think that EVERYONE should be required to work a fast food or retail job at some point in their lives, then they wouldn't treat the people who HAVE to work those jobs to support themselves so badly!!!!

The people who are rude to cashiers are probably rude to everybody. Some people have no respect for others. They don't realize nor care that you are there to help them. Just ignore their rude behavior and concentrate on the nice people who care. Think positive and you will have a good day!

Because they've never worked as a cashier and think that everyone has to serve them. Some of the rudest people I've worked with had rattier clothes than me and still acted as if their sh!t don't stink. I know how you feel!
