I have self harmed since I was 8 years old. Its not about attention seeking as I never showed anyone and am always ashamed after I have done it. I normally do it when I am hurt inside and feel unable to show it to other people it gradually builts up until I self harm, at the time part of me is thinking I will show you all how much you have hurt me mentally by showing you physically and other times I do it to calm myself down and come back to reality as afterwards my head is a lot clearer and I can put things into perspective. my 3 words are : Frustration anger hurt

Why the restriction to just 3 words? There are many motivations behind self harm and restricting answers to just 3 words will in no way allow you to understand your friend or help them.
If you must have a 3 word answer then I would prefer "cry for help" rather than attention seeking.

life can be hard. People keep things bottled up, its a way of letting out all the emotions you build up inside yourself.
If something bad happens in your life the only way to make yourself feel better is by just lashing out. I would rather hurt myself then anyone else.
Its not attention seeking in the slightest, most people do it where no one else can see anyway. Maybe this 'someone you know' wants your help.

i'm an ex self harmer, though in some cases it is a form of attention seeking most are due to menatl health issues mine was lacking the ability to cope with severe problems i has in my life. physical pain is easier to cope with than mental pain in those moments when i felt the blade slice into my arm and saw the blood start to pour out i forgot the problems i had.
it is possible to stop but it takes time my advice would be don't push your friend let them know you are there if they need to talk when they are ready they will come to you or another friend and admit they have a problem be patient and don't judge

Childhood emotional abuse.
FYI - Perhaps you should read up about self-harm.
It is not about attention seeking at all, most self-harmers keep their self-harm to themselves, most self-harmers you would not even know self-harm.
Self-harm is when someone lacks normal coping methods (often through problems with social development through childhood) and so when faced with extreme emotions they don't have 'normal' methods to deal so turn to self-abuse for lack of anything else to turn to, thus why self-harm for many seems to surface when they enter into their teenage years – past worse cases such as drug abuse, emotional abuse to themselves or others, or suicide.
They may believe it is for attention, even as self-punishment, but that is a secondary outcome, they need attention because they need help to cope with what they are going through, both the self-harm and whatever is triggering their need to self-harm.
I agree with above comments, you are not being a very good friend passing off their problems as attention seeking, further still you do not seem willing to learn about self-harm, not just for your friend but to others who suffer through self-harm.

You have made me feel like SELF HARMING myself - simply trying to de-code your question! You are on line, NOT sending a TEXT!
Please have the good manners to use the Queens English and an a Dictionary if necessary
God almighty, there are children in third world countries that would kill for your education you have abused!!!

It's probably not for attention - it's usually to let out pent-up emotions that can't find any other exit. It's wanting to punish yourself. It's feeling inadequate and utterly worthless. Your friend probably doesn't want anyone to notice the cuts, let alone demands attention for them. I'm sorry to tell you this, but I think that you are being a truly rubbish friend and that you should stop being so judgemental and looking for answers to something that is both inexplicable and incredibly personal.

Perhaps the combination of "too much misery" and like you said "not enough love".Why?, again you have the possible answer : attention seeking, which is really a way of crying out for help.
