Just spaghetti? No sauce? I'd say a nice Pinot Gris would work well.
With red sauce, I'd say a nice red blend of some sort or a mid-level cab. Fontelloro Red Wine, Six Prong Red, and Raymond Reserve Cab would all be fabulous. Personally, I think that too strong or too cheap of a Chianti would overwhelm most home cooked red sauces. A gentle Sangiovese would probably be fine.
With a white sauce, a light and fruity white would be best. A Chard would be too heavy, so I'd go with a nice Chablis or Pinot Gris. Even a traditional style Rose would work. Traditional style - not White Zin or a US style blush.
With an olio sauce, an oaky or grassy chardonnay would be great. The oaky would pair well with a pesto with pine nuts. A grassy would pair well with a simple olio & aglio or a very simple pesto.
Good luck to you. : )

You really should go to a wine tasting and try some different wines - you might be surprised... Anyway - Try a decent Pinot Noir. Castle Rock makes an excellent, not too dry, not too sweet version. The Mendocino County one is very good and not too expensive (around $12/bottle). Or, you may want to try a Rose or a White Zinfandel. I totally agree with staying away from the "alco-pops" like Arbor Mist or super sweet wines. Also, a good craft brew like an Amber or a Hefeweizen would be good with pasta.

Most of the DRY RED wines are good but the best is a red wine called Chianti from Italy and Chianti Classico if you can afford it. Enjoy!

Tomato based sauce? Chianti, of course. Try Cecchi it's a modestly priced Chianti.

The best wine to choose for any meal is something you like to drink. If your taste preference is broad then consider the following:
With red sauce then a Chianti or other sangiovese based red wine. If the sauce is spicy, consider a Zinfandel or primitivo.
If the sauce is cream based, then a crisp chardonnay or vigoner or pinto grigio is in order.
