just because i'm of mexican heritage,(born and raised in texas) people think they have the right to call me "amigo"
What's up w/ that? Ask me my name and I'll tell you, but just because of my skin color don't assume that I want to be your "amigo"

It depends who calls you "amigo" if it is another mexican it is a way to be polite. If it is another ethnicity, is because they either assume that you don't speak english, or don't know any better.

hmm, i understand that heritage can sometimes be a delicate subject for some people. But in Texas spanish is used interchangeably with english. Perhaps no one is meaning to offend you, just using to use a little spanish in their everyday vocabulary.

I think some people are to DAMN sensitive!
If we don't acknowledge your heritage we are racist or discriminating but if someone tries to say something nice they are bad guys as well.
You need to make up your freakin minds!
We are so hyper vigilant with this politically corrct crap we can't even say amigo"friend" without you getting bent?
GET A LIFE!

Using this terminology is probably a way for racist people to assert to you how "different" you are in "their" world. White people tend to think that its everyone else whos different and that people of color are... well... defined by their color and different language. Its messed up.

do you feel this way about everybody treating you in this manner, or just the 'other-than-hispanic descent' people...in all honesty, Americans have the right to call you anything they want, but most practice restraint and tact, so then it is really up to you to choose to be offended or not...

You are running into the wrong sorts of people. You don't say where you are, but I don't hear that word used in Kansas at all.

What, aren't you proud to be a Mexican, or don't you like friends?

they're probably just trying to be cool, to me that doesn't sound racist or anything. just tell them nicely that you don't appreciated and that you prefer to decide for yourself whose "amigo" you want to be.
