Simply put: It does two different things to your brain.

1) Opens up parts of your brain that you normally wouldn't use, thus allowing you to feel and see and hear things differently, as well as thinking differently. Creating somewhat of a different world for you, that is ALWAYS better than reality simply because that's what the drug does.

2) There is a part of your brain right in front of the Spinal cord known as the "reward pathway". With most drugs (LSD is an exception), the reward pathway is stimulated. This means that there is a mental addiction. Your brain will start remembering what it was like when you were "high" but will never be able to completely grasp it, thus convincing you to try it again, and again. Soon, the mental addiction becomes physical, when you can no longer function normally without drugs, simply because you are so used to the alternate reality.

Typically, it is not the drug that is addictive. It happens to be the addictive behavior of the individual, or the addictive mental state at which the person is in that facilitates a dependency and a constant need to obtain the euphoric state that the particular drug creates.

After you use a drug for so long your body becomes used to it.
At first your body really doesn't want the drug, but after a while your body adapts. That's when you notice that you are more "able" when using the drug.
After a while your body needs the drug , and you aren't so "able" without it.That's when you get into trouble.
Your body has learned so well to function with the drug that it can't function without it!
This is a very simplified answer, but take it from a recovering drug addict.......DON'T F$CK with drugs~!

Perhaps you should re-frame your question.
Some drugs have no effect on some people.
The key to addiction is the chemical dependency that some people experience.
Some people are more susceptible than others, due to the way the pleasure centers within the brain respond to the drug.

Not all drugs are addictive, only certain classes of drug. The chemical components change your body chemistry so that a craving for maintenance of a certain level of the drug in your body occurs.

It's the chemicals in the drugs and the demons in the person! Have a blessed day!

why are people so addict-ED is the real question. I think it's simple psychology. Did you ever hear of the monkey cocaine tests? They got hooked in a matter of minutes.
