Both television and today’s sophisticated computer games are powerful psychotropic drugs that alter one’s perception of reality. Indeed, they have become a substitute for reality—a surrogate for actual experience. Rather than living life, most Americans now experience it vicariously through the medium of television. Hence the proliferation of so many so called Reality Shows. Contrary to public opinion, the purpose of commercial television is not to inform the people with information that is relevant to their lives. It is to substitute fantasy for reality, lies for truth; entertainment for knowledge. The programming that most of us watch is not the primary purpose of television. Commercials—capitalism—are the primary reason for the existence of television. Even public television is not immune from heavy-handed manipulation from the Whitehouse and corporations.

This isn't anything new. Think of all the fairy tails out there that go back who knows how long. I'm sure there are a lot of girls out there in old times and now just waiting for a Prince Charming to sweep them off their feet. They expect it to happen and will continue to, no matter how many times they're shot down.

People will always be manipulated into believing in something fake. It's just the medium that varies.

Here was what I thought a grand argument against the TV and all its silliness, until the :: Even public television is not immune from heavy-handed manipulation from the White house and corporations.

You have used this forum for the same exact reasons you state are distasteful for others to use, that of under the disguise of one thing another is really meant. And yours is you political statement of the abuses of the white house and the all might corporations "capitalism" of the west. Give me a break, none of us sitting here today would be here doing what we are doing if it was not for the damnable capitalist and those terrible corporations.

When you want to speak of little sweet lies in the future be sure to add your name to the list.

What is reality? What is truth? Who are we and why are we here? These are questions that man has been asking for centuries. The majority has always hidden truth from the people. Reality has been changed to benefit those who are in power. Humans have been using books for reality substitutes forever, now it is just easier.

I only watch tv when it is the History Channel, Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, PBS, BBC-America or sports.. Reality tv sucks. However, it is my personal opinion that religion not tv alters ones reality and is a psychotropic drug.

Nova is the best show on TV. I only get 9 channels and strictly refuse to watch reality shows, which knocks out 6/9 of my channels about 8 hours out of the day. You're right. It smells slightly of the loss of focus that weakened Rome before it collapsed on itself from all sides. In my opinion this is why religion lasts too.

yes, so why do you watch it?

It does feed us lies and definetly slanted material.

Have you noticed it portrays nothing ,but spiritualism when it contains any thing remotely religous.

It portrays the good as the bad,

I don't think the white house controls the general shows we see, but I do agree it has some control over news issues.

Notice I said SOME. Obviously if it had full control Bush wouldn't be bashed.
Some control is necessary for National Security.

Not sure what all the rant after your question is about, but about your original question, I'm sick of the Big Lie of God and Religion...all the little ones are simply annoying.
