I've heard that you can tell if a dog is sick by checking their nose. If its wet it means theres something wrong, but if its dry then their okay. Is this true?

If a dog has a fever, its nose will often dry up. If it is dehydrated, it will
also dry up.

However, if it is suffering from various nasal infections, the nose may
be artificially wet.

So ... yes, it is an indicator, but not a perfect one.

You have it backwards. Typically a healthy dog will have a cool, wet nose. A dry nose is usually a signal that something is wrong.

It's the other way around. A dog's nose should be moist if everything is okay. The only time it should be dry is when they are sleeping. If it is dry while they are awake, something is wrong. It could indicate a fever.

Dog's noses vary between wet and dry, and it tells you nothing about their health. The nose symptoms that would indicate illness are discharge (mucousy and lasting more than 24 hours), dryness that causes cracking/scabbing/bleeding, swelling, difficulty breathing, constant sneezing (can be a sign of inhaling a foxtail), rawness (burn/sunburn), or growths. Generally any nose symptom worth worrying about will be pretty obvious.

The old myth is that if a dog's nose is wet it is ok, if it is hot and dry it is sick.

No. Wet or dry, either way means nothing.
If your pets nose is usually wet and suddenly becomes dry or vice versa, then MAYBE it could mean something is wrong

It's reverse... If their nose is warm and dry for extended periods of time it could be an indication of fever... Generally unreliable though. Take your dog to a vet.
