Because for some of us our animals matter just as much to us as do the humans in our lives. We develop an emotional attachment to them, and thus when they die we mourn.

To me this answer is simple. Pet owners for the most part form undeniable bonds with their pets. That's WHY people get pets. With dogs in particular, it's the undivided, unconditional (very important word here) attention we get from them.
Now aside from pets, I am not so sure people mourn dead animals like they were human. I certainly don't burst into tears if a friend's dog dies. Sure I comfort my friend, and if I knew the dog well I might be sad because I would have maintained a bond with that dog...not on the pet-owner level but a bond nonetheless.
But it all comes back to the bonds we form with animals, who more often than not, treat us better than our fellow human beings do :)

Personally I mourned my dog because he was a fantastic part of my life for 12 years. He loved me in his own way. Alway greated me with affection no matter what time I got home or what I looked like. He never judged me. Just wanted to be with me.
When you come home from a bad day and get greeted with joy it can make the whole day better. I'll miss him forever.

In America, most people DON'T mourn the same way for animals as we do for people... we don't spend thousands on funerals, burial plots, ceremonies; we don't invite friends and family over for comfort; we don't get 3 days of bereavement time from work. HOWEVER, lots of people mourn the deaths of a pet inside. Pets can display a lot of affection, show caring for their owners, and give "unconditional love." In return, we love them. And it always hurts when something you love and have invested a lot of time in dies. It is normal and natural.

The animals are a blessing. Adam in the Garden of Eden took care of the animals and they were his friends. He needed a companion like himself and God created Eve who was bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh.
the animal are meant to be our friends. We do get attached to them. god created them for our pleasure. It is not wrong in any way to mourn the passing of a beloved pet.

Because you become emotionally attached to it, like you would a human and you love the animal (like you would a human)

I don't. Unless it was a loyal pet,I don't see the point. Then again,I can't think of many people I would mourn either.I guess I am just cold hearted.

Sometimes pets are like surrogate children, and when people love an animal they will miss it when it is gone. Some people cry when their favorite TV show gets canceled, and some cry when their dog dies. People get attached and assign value to things they like.

Its healthy to show sorrow for the loss of a pet. After all they have been a friend to us. I still think of my little dog Gidget who had to be put down at 17 years old due to cancer and seizurres. It was a terriable moment. Its called Love....

Because you get emotionally attached to it. You feed the animal, probably hold it, talk to it and love it. It's like having a child.
