Caesar salads have no connection whatsoever to Julius Caesar, or indeed to any of the Caesars who ruled Rome and her far-flung empire. It instead honors Caesar Cardini, a famed restaurateur who invented the dish in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1924. His original recipe called for romaine, garlic, croutons, Parmesan cheese, boiled eggs, olive oil, and Worcestershire sauce. He was said to be staunchly against the inclusion of anchovies in the mixture, contending that Worchestershire sauce is adequate to provide the faint fishy flavor.

Irena C has it right, it was invented in Tijuana, Mexico in 1924. I have been to Caesars restaurant down in Tijuana where it was invented and have had the Caesar salad, it was fantastic. It has nothing at all to do with Julius Caesar. Just a famed restaurateur that made his idea, become common place...Have a great day...

Only very indirectly. My recollection from reading about this in several cookbooks was that Caesar salad was created by a chef named Cesar Cardini, and he named it after himself. According to foodreference.com, where I just looked it up, the restaurant was in Tijuana and it was in the 1920s. Everyone named Cesar is named after Julius Caesar, so indirectly, the salad is too.

The truth is the Ceasar salad was created by the chef at Ceasar's Palace Casino. Some of you guys have quit an imagination. I ate a Ceasar salad made using the original recipe yesterday at my neighbor's house. I prefer the one we have now that evolved from the original recipe.

Ceasar Cardini invented it in 1924. It's documented... look it up!
The whole King visiting/chef throwing something together story is the story of the sandwhich- not ceasar salad!
