The engine light on my dodge intrepid about 2 weeks ago. I drive it only when necessary, because right now I'm waiting to start my new job before I have it brought in. Basically, once the car hits highway cruise mode then slows down I get a helluva shift shock then the RPMs shoot through the roof. If I turn the car off and restart then problem is remedied. Is there anything I can do or is this nothing more than a needed transmission rebuild/replace?

Your transmission is going into "Limp-in"mode, that's why it downshifts to second gear. The Transmission computer is detecting a fault in the transmission electronics or hydraulic system, and shutting off all power to the transmission. There are literally dozens of things that can cause this, as james r said, it may be as simple as a Speed Sensor, or it could be something as major as a transmission internal failure. First, you need to have the transmission checked for fault code(s), and go from there. AutoZone will scan your vehicle for free, and if I know what fault code(s) are present, perhaps I can give you some advice on repairs. But I gotta have fault codes!

It sure does sound like a comp is getting confused or a trouble error signal and therefore causing the shifting issues and once you restart the engine you're resetting the comp and it then starts to work again. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way it does sound like the TCM=transmission module is going into a limp mode=or safe mode due to something like a speed sensor failer and that would only give you 2 emergency gears to run on iuntil it's reset.I highly recommend you get the transmission shop not just to give it a free test drive diagnose but also have them scan the system bec their equipment can scan the system while it's being driven and detect and indicate the cause if it's electronic device such as a speed sensor failer.Keep in mind that there is a input sensor and output sensor too.

the shifting problem isn't related any to the cam shaft sensor on that car,you need to take it and let a transmission shop test drive it they wont charge you nothing and get their opinion on it, its almost impossible these days to guess at the new transmissions they are more electrically controlled than the older ones was, this could be something as simple as the transmission control module going bad on it,but a shop will be able to tell you more about it,good luck.

A ray of hope! It is most likely just a speed sensor in you trans
mission. It will set off the engine light and put the vehicle into
(limp mode) 2nd gear - it will be very clunky. Parts and labour should not be more than $160.00 plus taxes. a $60.00 diagnostic test at any dealer will tell you if that is all that's wrong or something worst.

good luck

I had something like that happen on my Stratus a few years ago and I had to get the TCM (transmission control module) replaced for around $200. Take it to a good local tranny shop.

Sounds bad. The next time you drive it, drive it to the nearest transmission shop. If you don't, it's either gonna strand you or get you killed.
