Has anyone out there looking for a job noticed these types of ads that say, CONSTRUCTION WORK, or POSTAL WORK, or FIREFIGHTERS WANTED, and they all say they provide training, etc., and ask for people age 17+, willing to travel, in good physical condition, high school grads...

and the 1-800 number is a regional navy recruitment office.

anyone ever seen this?
I know it happens not just in my local paper but all around the country from a quick google search.
is it legal? opinions?

by the way, the navy recruiter I talked to the first time I called when looking for a job said that they put "firefighters wanted" because anyone working on a ship learns how to put out a fire.

Both the army and the navy have posted adds like that for 30 years. Nothing wrong with it...they do have those jobs available...and many more.

Sure it's legal. The government writes the laws right? It's true about learning how to put out a fire on a ship. If you join the air force you can also become a firefighter. Jet fuel is v. inflammable.
The real question is- does it work? That is does it get motivated young people who want to serve their county or desperate job seekers.
There is a concept known as the "economic draft". There are some young people who's chances in the world of work are not so good. They have only a high school education or less. they have no money for further education. They live in depressed areas of he country where job opportunities are few. For them, assuming no shooting war, joining the military can make sense. They can save for further education, and have something to put on a job application than "sitting around turkey holler with my thumb up my nose."

its a way the navy uses to get people who are looking for work in a local area to get in contact with a navy representative. There are those jobs as advertised available in the navy. It's perfectly legal, and you can always spot them because they have an age range, which is legal for the military and illegal for other employers.

My cousin was a firefighter on a ship for most of his career, then went on to be a firefighter when he went civilian. Its a good job, and the pay isn't that bad considering you get free room and board.

Whats wrong with it. Its a job just like any other job that you would find in a newspaper.

If that is illegal then having any job advertisment in the newspaper would be illegal...

Thank you. Yes, I've seen those ads. I wondered who needed so many mailcarriers.
